Hans A. Baer is Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Social Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He has published 19 books and some 180 book chapters and refereed articles on a diversity of research topics, including Mormonism, African-American religion, socio-political life in East Germany, critical medical anthropology, medical pluralism in the United States, UK, and Australia, the critical anthropology of climate change and Australian climate politics.

Hans' career appointments include:

  • 1971–73: Instructor of Anthropology and Sociology (Kearney State College, Kearney, NB)
  • 1976–79: Assistant Professor of Social Studies (George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, TN)
  • 1979–80: Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Medical Anthropology Program (Michigan State University, Lansing)
  • 1980–81: Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Sociology (St. John's University, Queens, NY)
  • 1981–83: Assistant Professor of Anthropology (University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg)
  • 1983–: Associate Professor, then promoted to Full Professor of Anthropology and Sociology (University of Arkansas, Little Rock)
  • 1988–89: Fulbright Lecturer (Humboldt University, Department of British and American Studies)

Hans also served as a Member of the Board of Directors for the American Indian Center of Arkansas from 1986 and for the Arkansas Peace Center from 1984.

He is also a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and a member of the Society for Medical Anthropology, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the Southern Anthropological Society and the Arkansas Sociological and Anthropological Association.

Hans was awarded the National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships in 1977, 1984 and 1985. From 1979 to 1980, he received a fellowship in anthropology at Michigan State University. In 1989, Hans won a research award in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Arkansas.

Hans' most recent books include Global Warming and the Political Ecology of Health (with Merrill Singer, Left Coast Press, 2009), Global Capitalism and Climate Change (AltaMira, 2012), Climate Politics and the Climate Movement in Australia (with Verity Burgmann, Melbourne University Press, 2012), The Anthropology of Climate Change (with Merrill Singer, Routledge, 2014; 2nd edition, 2018) and Democratic Eco-Socialism as a Real Utopia (Berghahn Books, 2018).

He considers himself a scholar-activist who, over the years, has worked in the labor, environmental, peace, and socialist movements.
